Process and Plan

My background as an animator, compositor, editor and director has been littered with diversity in terms of style, process and medium. Our approach to any project requires us to look at the desired result and then quantify a number of variables. We’d like to sort out a plan. The plan may not be the obvious first or second way forward but one that is crafted for that look. Often a little different in concept and approach. This look falls back on things like classical animation, 3D animation, stop motion, matte paintings, background animation, and light animation.

Breaking apart the "Gladiator" look and feel.

Here are a few of the talking points that make the “Gladiator” look and feel the way that it does. These include look and process.

1. image bed and/or footage

This is a starting point in terms of subject, background and ground plane.
If we don’t have one we need to create a template or image.

2. shape and form (what is the imagery and how does it lend itself to this look and process

3. An element that is used throughout the opening

The drawing or representation of lighting bright and bold,
and animation to indicate the movement of the light source.

4. This lighting setup often appears over footage/animation and matte paintings

5. drawn animated background used as transitional elements between clips.

Colour change and brightness act as prologue to the next shot and tone.

6. The subjects appear as large elements

Not intricate and are supported in animation and look with large and abstract strokes.

If there is no footage to follow we can create environments and subjects that support the narrative and also help address the desired look. We can animate the light how we see fit. And create camera angles not always possible or expected to best shape the narrative. This look will make the look our look. Crafting and testing we can develop a style and process that is related to the “Gladiator” look and feel but at the sametime something new and innovative.

Lee Griggs has found a way to mimic the look of brush strokes on a 3D object.

This approach or something along these lines could be used as our animation guide. Supported by a rudimentary environment and compositing treatment this could be our backdrop, framing element or a tool to shape the environment.

Animated characters and an animated camera could be developed, changes and lighting tests could all be completed before the post begins. This would allow us to create the timing of the scenes and how it works within the edit before starting the post drawing process.
